Use Gratitude to Lift your Mood

Posted on Posted in Counseling Blog

This morning on my usual walk I was reminded how much a good night sleep can change your perspective on your situtaion and how having a grateful heart makes for a happy person.  I am a big believer in gratitude and the law of attraction.  Typically, in the mornings I will take our dog for a walk and think about what I am grateful for.  However for this past week I have been slacking off in saying my thanks.

As a result, I have been in a more depressed mood.  Things that I have been working on just weren’t panning out and I was choosing to put myself in a funk.  But this morning something magnificent happen to me…my mood lifted.  There were two things that attributed to my mood change:

1.  A good nights rest

2.  Being grateful for the things that are panning out

Sometimes we can get so caught up in trying to control the outcome, that we forget to be grateful for what we do have.  I am guilty of always trying to work my way to success.  The harder I work the more results I expect.  This sometimes works, but most of the time I am met with a big “slow down” period where I need to be reminded that it is not totally up to me how it plays out.  In those times I do have to remember to say my gratitude statements and appreciate what is working and instead of focusing on what is not.

I encourage everyone to make a list of 7 things you are grateful for (and look beyond material things).

For example:

I am grateful that I have the ability to:

Walk my dog

See the world

Experience nature

Smile at strangers

Listen to the birds sing

Play with my kids

Have fun with my husband

Now write a list of 7 wonders you experienced last week.

For example:

Last week I am grateful that I experienced:

My son laughing as we wrestled

A break through with a client

A good conversation with my husband

Fun walk with my friend

A peaceful walk with my dog

Walking into my beautiful office

Smelling my morning coffee brewing

I hope you enjoy your day and be thankful for what you have.  I am so grateful that I was met with the slow down period because it helped me get back to the basics.  For me that means always saying, “thank you.”
